The Wiring Dance
3. A Guide to Safe and Effective Wiring
Alright, let's get down to the nitty-gritty (oops, almost slipped up there!). Here's a step-by-step guide to wiring eight lights to one switch. Remember, safety is paramount, so if you're unsure about any step, consult a qualified electrician.
Step 1: Disconnect the power at the breaker. I know I've said it before, but it's worth repeating. Double-check with your voltage tester. Seriously.
Step 2: Connect the power source to the switch. Typically, you'll have a black wire (hot), a white wire (neutral), and a green or bare copper wire (ground). Connect the black wire to one of the terminals on the switch. Connect the white wire to the neutral wire in the junction box. Connect the ground wire to the ground screw on the switch.
Step 3: Run wires from the switch to the first light fixture. Connect the black wire from the switch to the black wire of the first light fixture. Connect the white wire from the neutral wire in the junction box to the white wire of the first light fixture. Connect the ground wire to the ground screw on the light fixture.
Step 4: Continue wiring the remaining light fixtures in parallel. Run wires from the first light fixture to the second, from the second to the third, and so on, until you've connected all eight lights. Make sure to maintain the same wiring scheme: black to black, white to white, and ground to ground.
